Island Table

The Problem

The Island Table was developed as a solution to living in a dorm. I found the conventional dorm desk did not serve my needs particularly well. So I asked myself; How can the dorm desk be improved? This question guided a lot of the choices I made in making this product. These choices lead to the developemnt of a desk that was, more useful, took up less space, and eliminated extra expences.

Key Issues

Space Utilization- there is a very large desktop but most of it is uncofortable to use as a working surface because it is either out of reach or blocked by the drawers.

Ergonomics- the hight of the desktop causes you to bend over when working which is bad for you back. In addition, the placement of the lowest drawer is too low to be comfortably accessed.

Footprint Size- because of the additional desktop space as well as the need for a chair the footprint of this desk is very large.

Initial Concepts

Space Utilization and Footprint Size

The Space utilization of a traditional desk is on the right while that of the island table is on the left. As you can see the unique shape of the Island table allows for a smaller footprint while increasing the amount of usable desktop space.

Ergonomics

The ergonomics of a traditional desk are provided on the left while those of the island desk are on the right. As you can see the island table has a proportionately taller work surface whilst maintaining an appropriate angle for screen viewing. This allows for better posture while working both off and on screen. This also eliminates the need for a desk chair.

Finalized Design

The Finalized design combined elements from all three of the initial sketches. The dimentions of a floor work table, the indent to allow for full imertion into your work, and multifaseted carving to invoke the calming imagery of an island.
